<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/StopRansomare?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">#StopRansomare<\/a>: Review our ? <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/cybersecurity?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">#cybersecurity<\/a> advisory, outlining known <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AkiraRansomware?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">#AkiraRansomware<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TTPs?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">#TTPs<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IOCs?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">#IOCs<\/a>, developed with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FBI?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">@FBI<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EC3Europol?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">@EC3Europol<\/a>, &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ncsc_nl?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">@NCSC_NL<\/a> to reduce the exploitation of businesses and critical infrastructure. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2VBMKhoAXK\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/t.co\/2VBMKhoAXK<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Nn0fEK4HRw\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/Nn0fEK4HRw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; CISA Cyber (@CISACyber) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CISACyber\/status\/1781008126856020429?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">April 18, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEarly versions of the Akira\u00a0ransomware variant were written in C++ and encrypted files with a\u00a0.akira\u00a0extension; however, beginning in August 2023, some Akira attacks began deploying Megazord, using Rust-based code which encrypts files with a\u00a0.powerranges\u00a0extension.\u00a0\u00a0Akira threat actors have continued to use both Megazord and Akira, including Akira_v2 (identified by trusted third party investigations) interchangeably,\u201d the joint <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/news-events\/cybersecurity-advisories\/aa24-109a\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">cybersecurity advisory<\/a> reads.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI and cybersecurity researchers have observed Akira threat actors obtaining initial access to organizations through a virtual private network (VPN) service without multifactor authentication (MFA) configured, mostly using known Cisco vulnerabilities CVE-2020-3259 and CVE-2023-20269.<\/p>\n<p>Additional methods of initial access include the use of external-facing services such as Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), spear phishing attacks, and credential abuse.<\/p>\n<p>Once initial access is obtained, Akira threat actors attempt to exploit the functions of domain controllers by creating new domain accounts to establish persistence.<\/p>\n<p>The group uses Kerberoasting techniques and Mimikatz to extract credentials, LaZagne to help aid in privilege escalation, PowerTool to exploit the Zemana AntiMalware driver and terminate antivirus-related processes, and FileZilla, WinRAR, WinSCP, and RClone for data exfiltration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAkira threat actors do not leave an initial ransom demand or payment instructions on compromised networks, and do not relay this information until contacted by the victim,\u201d the agencies\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRansom payments are paid in Bitcoin to cryptocurrency wallet addresses provided by the threat actors. To further apply pressure, Akira threat actors threaten to publish exfiltrated data on the Tor network, and in some instances have called victimized companies, according to FBI reporting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FBI, CISA, EC3, and NCSC-NL\u00a0have provided a range of robust cybersecurity practices for defenders to combat the threat of Akira ransomware, including:<\/p>\n<p>Enabling phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication (MFA) across all critical systems, particularly VPNs, webmail, and accounts; implementing strict access controls and segmenting networks to restrict the spread of ransomware; maintaining offline data backups; regularly maintaining\u00a0backup and restoration\u00a0and ensuring that all\u00a0operating systems,
