{"id":127195,"date":"2025-06-14T14:02:30","date_gmt":"2025-06-14T08:32:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.techworm.net\/?p=127195"},"modified":"2025-06-14T14:02:30","modified_gmt":"2025-06-14T08:32:30","slug":"apples-imessage-flaw-exploited-to-target-journalists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.techworm.net\/2025\/06\/apples-imessage-flaw-exploited-to-target-journalists.html","title":{"rendered":"Apple&#8217;s iMessage Flaw Exploited by Paragon Spyware to Target Journalists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A newly disclosed zero-click vulnerability in Apple\u2019s iMessage platform was exploited to spy on journalists in Europe using high-end spyware built by the Israeli company Paragon Solutions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Two Journalists Targeted<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Citizen Lab, a digital rights watchdog at the University of Toronto, confirmed forensic evidence that at least two journalists\u2014Ciro Pellegrino of the Italian publication Fanpage.it, and an anonymous \u201cprominent European journalist\u201d\u2014had their iPhones running iOS 18.2.1 infected with Paragon\u2019s Graphite spyware in early 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur forensic analysis concluded that one of the journalist\u2019s devices was compromised with Paragon\u2019s Graphite spyware in January and early February 2025 while running\u00a0iOS 18.2.1,\u201d reads the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/citizenlab.ca\/2025\/06\/first-forensic-confirmation-of-paragons-ios-mercenary-spyware-finds-journalists-targeted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">report<\/a>\u00a0published by Citizen Labs on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe attribute the compromise to Graphite with high confidence because logs on the device indicated that it made a series of requests to a server that, during the same time period, matched our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/citizenlab.ca\/2025\/03\/a-first-look-at-paragons-proliferating-spyware-operations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">published<\/a>\u00a0Fingerprint P1.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same iMessage account identified in earlier attacks was found in Pellegrino\u2019s device logs, \u201cwhich we associate with a Graphite zero-click infection attempt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since mercenary spyware vendors typically assign dedicated infrastructure to each client, the account \u201cwould be used exclusively by a single Graphite customer\/operator, and we conclude that this customer targeted both individuals,\u201d the report added.<\/p>\n<p>Apple notified both the victims on April 29, 2025, along with selected iOS users, warning them that their devices had been targeted by \u201cadvanced spyware.\u201d The now-patched zero-day iMessage vulnerability\u2014CVE-2025-43200\u2014 allowed the spyware to infect iPhones without any user interaction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Is Graphite?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Graphite is an advanced surveillance tool built by Paragon Solutions, an Israeli cyber-intelligence firm with ties to former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak. The tool enables government clients to remotely access a target&#8217;s device remotely, retrieving data such as messages, emails, photos, location data, and even real-time access to the microphone or camera.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How The Attack Worked<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The attacker used a generic iMessage account, labeled \u2018ATTACKER1\u2019 in research documents, to deliver specially crafted messages exploiting a<strong> l<\/strong>ogic flaw in how iOS processed maliciously crafted photos or videos shared via an iCloud Link. The exploit affected devices running iOS 18.2.1 and earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The attack was what\u2019s known as a zero-click exploit\u2014required no action from the victim\u2014no clicks, no downloads\u2014 leaving virtually no visible trace on the phone. Once the spyware was activated, it connected to a command-and-control server at <a href=\"https:\/\/46.183.184[.]91\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">https:\/\/46.183.184[.]91<\/a>, a VPS linked to Paragon&#8217;s infrastructure, and secretly accessed messages, emails, photos, location, microphone, camera, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Apple quietly addressed the issue on February 10, 2025, as part of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/122174\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">iOS 18.3.1, iPadOS 18.3.1<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/122173\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">iPadOS 17.7.5<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/122900\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">macOS Sequoia 15.3.1<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/122901\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">macOS Sonoma 14.7.4<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/122902\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">macOS Ventura 13.7.4<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/122903\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">watchOS 11.3.1<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/122904\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">visionOS 2.3.1<\/a>. However, the use of this zero-day exploit was only revealed publicly in June after Citizen Lab\u2019s investigation.<\/p>\n<p>In its <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/122174#:~:text=Entry%20added%20June%2011%2C%202025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">now-updated advisory<\/a>, the iPhone maker describes the flaw as \u201ca logic issue existed when processing a maliciously crafted photo or video shared via an iCloud Link,\u201d noting that the vulnerability was resolved through enhanced input validation.<\/p>\n<p>The company also acknowledged reports that it&#8217;s aware the vulnerability &#8220;may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specifically targeted individuals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>European Journalists In Danger Due To Spyware Crisis <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the time Citizen Lab published their report, three European journalists had been confirmed as targets of Paragon\u2019s Graphite spyware\u2014two through forensic evidence and one via Meta\u2019s notification. One case is tied to the Italian outlet <em data-start=\"298\" data-end=\"310\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Fanpage.it<\/em>, raising urgent questions about who is behind the attacks and whether any legal justification exists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lack of accountability available to these spyware targets highlights the extent to which journalists in Europe continue to be subjected to this highly invasive digital threat, and underlines the dangers of spyware proliferation and abuse,\u201d the report concluded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A newly disclosed zero-click vulnerability in Apple\u2019s iMessage platform was exploited to spy on journalists in Europe using high-end spyware built by the Israeli company Paragon Solutions.
