These add-ons can hijack browsing data, steal credentials, or inject unwanted content.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LayerX Discovers The \u201cAiFrame\u201d Campaign<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Researchers at browser security platform LayerX recently uncovered a malicious operation, which they named AiFrame. It involves 30 malicious Chrome extensions that are part of the same coordinated effort and pose as AI assistants for summarization, chat, writing, and Gmail assistance.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers determined this after finding that each extension communicates with infrastructure hosted under a single domain: <em>tapnetic[.]pro<\/em>. They also discovered that all the extensions share:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The same internal structure<\/li>\n<li>Identical JavaScript logic<\/li>\n<li>Similar permission requests<\/li>\n<li>The same backend infrastructure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This confirmed the campaign was not random \u2014 but a large, organized operation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Over 300,000 Users Affected<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to LayerX, the 30 malicious extensions have been installed by more than 300,000 users.<\/p>\n<p>The most popular extension in the campaign was called Gemini AI Sidebar (fppbiomdkfbhgjjdmojlogeceejinadg), which had 80,000 users before it was removed from the Chrome Web Store.<\/p>\n<p>However, investigations by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/news\/security\/fake-ai-chrome-extensions-with-300k-users-steal-credentials-emails\/?fbclid=IwY2xjawP7kOtleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETJuYTdmaHVhdWJkTGt0R1Bnc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHonNeQ7LYgTQ7TpIRZeHlyNQMgChEMk_dDB2-kzwz7fvHbdqn-gCynzmCYLl_aem_4yvm0vkrloThqZYNdLDdhA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><em>BleepingComputer<\/em><\/a> found that several other malicious extensions remain live on Google\u2019s repository \u2014 some of which have been installed tens of thousands of times.<\/p>\n<p>Among them are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>AI Sidebar (gghdfkafnhfpaooiolhncejnlgglhkhe) \u2013 70,000 users<\/li>\n<li>AI Assistant (nlhpidbjmmffhoogcennoiopekbiglbp) \u2013 60,000 users<\/li>\n<li>ChatGPT Translate (acaeafediijmccnjlokgcdiojiljfpbe) \u2013 30,000 users<\/li>\n<li>AI GPT (kblengdlefjpjkekanpoidgoghdngdgl) \u2013 20,000 users<\/li>\n<li>ChatGPT (llojfncgbabajmdglnkbhmiebiinohek) \u2013 20,000 users<\/li>\n<li>AI Sidebar (djhjckkfgancelbmgcamjimgphaphjdl) \u2013 10,000 users<\/li>\n<li>Google Gemini (fdlagfnfaheppaigholhoojabfaapnhb) \u2013 10,000 users<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Researchers note that in some cases, the extension names may differ, but the identifying code and structure remain the same.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How The Extensions Work<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although the extensions present themselves as AI assistants, they do not run AI functionality locally. Instead, they render a full-screen iframe that loads content from a remote domain.<\/p>\n<p>This is a major security concern because it allows the operators to change the extension\u2019s behavior at any time, without submitting an update to the Chrome Web Store for review.<\/p>\n<p>Security experts compare this technique to how Microsoft Office Add-ins function, where remote logic can be altered without pushing a new version.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Data Theft In The Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While displaying a fake AI interface, the extensions quietly extract data in the background.<\/p>\n<p>LayerX found that the add-ons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Scrape content from websites users visit<\/li>\n<li>Capture data from sensitive authentication pages<\/li>\n<li>Use Mozilla\u2019s Readability library to extract page content<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What is more concerning is that 15 of the extensions specifically target Gmail users.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Gmail-related features such as AI-assisted replies or summaries are invoked, the extracted email content is passed into the extension\u2019s logic and transmitted to third-party backend infrastructure controlled by the extension operator,\u201d\u00a0LayerX <a href=\"https:\/\/layerxsecurity.com\/blog\/aiframe-fake-ai-assistant-extensions-targeting-260000-chrome-users-via-injected-iframes\/?utm_source=BC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">wrote\u00a0in a blog post published<\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a result, email message text and related contextual data may be sent off-device, outside of Gmail\u2019s security boundary, to remote servers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why This Attack Is So Dangerous<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although the extensions present themselves as AI assistants, they do not run AI functionality locally. Instead, they render a full-screen iframe that loads content from a remote domain.
